It’s been 44 years since the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI. That same year, Men at Work released their now-classic track “Down Under” in the US. Now, the 49ers are hoping to kick off a Super Bowl season with a trip to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 10th where they’ll compete against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in Australia.
With kickoff slated for 8:35 p.m. Eastern Time, the follow-up to last night's Super Bowl rematch between the Seahawks and Patriots will be just the fifth-ever regular season game streamed on Netflix, yet another wrinkle in a game between two familiar faces. But don’t worry, your friends Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel, Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and more haven’t gone anywhere; the matchup’s location on the map—and your TV—might look a little different for Week 1, but this NFC West rivalry is still the same grudge match that you know and love.

A Division Rivalry, Reintroduced:
Brock Purdy is still among the best stories in football: Mr. Irrelevant, the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, who built his career by defeating doubters as he turned opportunity (Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury) into a Super Bowl appearance. After signing a major contract extension last offseason, the “is he the guy?” conversation seems to finally be over—Mac Jones be damned—but not everyone is convinced the former Iowa State Cyclone can get the job done. Luckily, he’s not alone.
Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, among the best players in the league, anchors the 49ers backfield, and might finally be fully healthy after a precautionary break at training camp due to calf tightness. Alongside him is Deebo Samuel, who returned to the Bay after a so-so year in Washington, George Kittle, who also appears to be healthy, and rookie wideout De’Zhaun Stribling. If you put on your tin foil hat, you’ll know that the only thing that can stop this star-studded lineup is an electric substation.
Meanwhile, the Rams are once again being talked up as Super Bowl favorites. 38-year-old Stafford is the reigning MVP, and he’s got Nacua and Davante Adams along for the ride once again, in addition to a loaded backfield featuring Kyren Williams and Blake Corum…oh, and if you like defense, the Rams managed to lure Aaron Donald out of retirement after trading for none other than the reigning Defensive Player of the Year: Myles Garrett.
